With a missing tooth, many patients have questions about replacement. Should I replace my missing tooth? What options are available to me? Will not replacing the tooth impact the appearance and function of my smile? At the practice of Dr. Darren Gonzalez, patients who have lost or extracted teeth should ask these questions and learn about the best replacement option for their unique needs. For many replacing a single tooth, the dental implant is the most desirable option.

How the dental implant works

The dental implant itself is a dental restoration made of titanium that is designed to replace the tooth root of a missing tooth. It is held in place by the jawbone, just as a natural tooth is. Dr. Darren Gonzalez of Santa Rosa, California will first plan the procedure by taking x-ray images. During oral surgery, the implant is inserted into the jawbone and the process of bone growth called osseointegration occurs. This bone growth allows the jawbone to wrap around the implant and hold it in place. Above the gumline sits the abutment of the dental implant, which holds a restoration to complete the process. To replace a single tooth, a dental crown is created and placed on this abutment, but other options includes dentures and dental bridges.

Who is a candidate for a dental implant?

The best candidates for dental implants are patients who have sufficient bone in the jaw to support the implant, and those who have a healthy smile free from periodontal disease and tooth decay. These conditions can negatively affect the ability for a dental implant to stay in place and cause the procedure to be unsuccessful. This can take time and money to repair. With x-rays, Dr. Darren Gonzalez can ensure patients are able to have a dental implant placed during oral surgery—and have it last a lifetime!
