Do you avoid scheduling dental visits because of fear and anxiety over the treatments performed? Do you find yourself putting off cleanings and evaluations for fear of being told you need extensive dental work completed? If you are one of the millions of Americans who deal with dental anxiety, we understand how you feel! At the practice of Dr. Darren Gonzalez of Santa Rosa, California, patients can ask about the use of sedation to get necessary dental work done comfortably and without anxiety!

What is oral conscious sedation?

At the practice of Dr. Darren Gonzalez, we utilize oral conscious sedation to put patients at ease for their dental visits. Oral conscious sedation is different than laughing gas or IV sedation. This method involves the prescription of a sedative in oral pill form that is taken prior to the dental appointment. Patients arrange transportation to and from their dental visit as they are not to operate a vehicle while under sedation. Patients arrive anxiety-free and awake, and are able to respond to commands and requests. The dentist can complete the procedure and then send the patient back home to rest as the medication wears off. Many patients do not remember their dental appointment afterwards, but have their work completed.

Who is a candidate for oral conscious sedation?

Sedation is not just for patients who have a fear of the dentist’s chair. Other patients who use oral conscious sedation for their appointments are those who:

  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Have sensitive teeth
  • Have difficulties sitting still for long procedures
  • Have several procedures done during one visit
  • Have back or neck pain
  • Want to relax during their procedures
