Patients who have obtained dental implants to replace one or more teeth may have questions about how to take care of them. Dr. Darren Gonzalez and his team in Santa Rosa, CA are here to help educate individuals on the best way to maintain their implants and ensure they last a lifetime!

Tips and recommendations for dental implant care

Below are just a few of the ways in which patients can maintain their dental implants:

  • Brush the teeth after every meal to remove food particles and debris that might accumulate around the implant and the teeth.
  • Floss each evening, and do so carefully around the implant to eliminate the risk of bacteria and plaque along the gumline that can contribute to periodontal disease.
  • Use the right tools. Ask your dentist about the best toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss to use to keep the smile healthy.
  • Change out your toothbrush as directed, every three months. Switch it out earlier if you have recently been sick or the bristles of the brush begin to fray.
  • Protect the smile, avoiding things that can damage the implant or natural teeth. This includes avoidance of certain habits such as nail biting and wearing a protective nightguard when you sleep if you have bruxism (clenching and grinding).
  • Visit the dentist regularly to monitor the health of the implant and the smile as a whole. With routine appointments for cleanings and evaluations, patients can catch any problems early before they become a bigger issue.

How long will my dental implant last?

With proper care, most of our patients will enjoy their dental implants for the rest of their lives. However, certain problems and conditions, including periodontal disease, can significantly change the health of the smile. These conditions can also cause bone and gum shrinkage that could put the implant at risk of becoming loose and lost.
