If you want to achieve and keep a healthy smile, you need to take care of your teeth and gums. Not only should you be brushing after every meal, but you should also be flossing at least once a day. Dr. Darren Gonzalez and his team in Santa Rosa, CA, educate patients on the benefits of flossing and help them better understand the importance of flossing.

Why is flossing important?

Dr. Darren Gonzalez will encourage all patients to floss their teeth for a number of reasons. First, flossing can help remove plaque and bacteria from between the teeth and along the gum line. This can help in preventing cavities and gum disease. Second, flossing can help keep your teeth and gums healthy by stimulating blood flow to the area. Third, flossing can help to prevent bad breath by removing food particles and bacteria from your mouth.

How do I floss my teeth?

Flossing is relatively simple, but it does require some technique. First, you will need to choose the type of floss that is right for you. There are a number of different varieties of floss available, so you may want to speak with Dr. Darren Gonzalez about which type is right for you. Once you select the right type of floss, you will need to break off about 16-18 inches of dental floss. Wrap the floss around the middle fingers, leaving a few inches of floss between them. Use your thumbs and index fingers to hold the floss tight against your teeth. Slide the floss up and down between each tooth, being careful not to snap the floss into place. Curve the floss into a small C shape when you reach the gum line and gently slide it up and down along the tissues. Repeat this process for all the teeth.
